Sunday 16th November 2008 No. 1993

VOCATION AWARENESS WEEKEND This year the Catholic Church in Ireland has asked us to reflect on our Christian calling and so has called for a 'Year of Vocation'.  The year runs from Vocation Sunday 2008 to Vocation Sunday 3rd May 2009.  Its threefold theme - Called to Love, Called to Serve, Called to Witness - includes all vocations within the Church.

Whatever we do', whoever we are, - whether we are single, or married, young or older, priest or religious - it will have something to say to each one of us in our following of Jesus Christ. it will help us deepen and appreciate our belonging to the Church.  An important feature of this year will be the promotion of Priesthood and Religious Life.  During the weekend of 22nd/23rd November we, in BANDON parish, are invited to focus on and appreciate our own particular call, asking the Lord to deepen our belonging to Him.  There will be a short input on the topic of 'Vocation' at each Mass over the weekend and 'Vocation Literature' will be on display in each Church.

Reflection

Our three readings today invite us to reflect on three aspects of our lives, talents, family life and how to wait for the Lords coming.  In all three of these there is a call for reliability.  The Book of Proverbs highlights the importance of a virtuous wife and mother.  In all her work a mother shows love by what she does.  Indeed who would any of us be today without the loving influence and guidance our mothers had on us.  The parable in our Gospel makes quite clear that Jesus expects us to boldly, not foolishly use our talents so they can increase.  Our God gives good gifts to all his children and our gifts are meant to be used.  The more we turn gifts into possessions the less valuable they become.  By creatively using our talents we are being faithful to God gifts.  To be of service to others is to experience the joy of Christian life.  Finally for all of us to be known as reliable people is crucial, as we journey towards the end, life with God for all eternity.  St. Paul tells us the Christian is to be firm in the belief that God is reliable and keeps his promise.  For our part we are to be reliable in our various duties.Reliability is a basic trust.  We can turn to God in all our needs. Let us be reliable in our commitments to God and one another. Fr.  Paul
