Reflection

Making promises is easy, we all know that; keeping them and living up to them is another story.  Actions speak louder than words.  There is a danger in answering too quickly.  Often it is motivated by immature feelings of wanting to please.  However when it comes to walk one's talk, there is an absence of action.  We cannot back up what we say.  Our gospel reading today invites us to consider the relationship between words and deeds.  The older son responds quickly to his fathers request.  'I am on my way sir, yet he never shows.  The second son is better than his talk, he is mature enough to rise above his words and do the right thing.  He is able to free himself from his past words.  In our own lives think of how many times we are slaves to our angry word and find it impossible to forgive or ask forgiveness for what was said.  God does not merely say that he loves us, he showed his love by word and deed in the sending of the Son into our history.  St. Paul puts it so beautifully in his letter to the Philippians, ... "He emptied himself and took the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of all people and humbled himseff, obediently accepting death on a cross." True love calls for involvement.  There is no such thing as love at a distance.  Words of love are necessary but never sufficient.  God paid us the highest compliment by becoming one like us.  As disciples of Jesus we are to be a people of love in word and deed.
