Reflection

Life is full of choices, some more important than others.  The rich young man was invited to make a choice if he wanted eternal life.  From the very beginning of time, choices have been put before individuals and communities.  And with each choice there is a consequence, as we learn from the Old Testament.  Adam chose to eat forbidden fruit and was banished from the Garden of Eden.  Cain chose to kill his brother Abel and was banished from his home.  Moses gave his people the choice of life and success if they followed the commands of God; otherwise the consequence was death and disaster.

Choices flow from personal values we have.  These values determine a person's way of being, living and acting.  We need to have the correct values so that everything we do is good for ourselves and our neighbour.  We need the gift of wisdom, mentioned in the First Reading.  We are invited to pray so that we have the correct understanding of good and evil, of right and wrong, and the place of attachment to riches in our lives.  We are but stewards.  The highest values are based on what Jesus has taught us.  Doing the will of God is the supreme value.  If our prevailing values are those taught by the active and alive word of God, these will have repercussions on our moral life, our work, our family and in the way we see and care for the environment.

God wants us to have what is necessary to live.  He wants us to pay attention to our health.  But wealth and health are not to be the total focus of our lives.  Do we just pray for the gifts of health and wealth for ourselves while ignoring the need to reach out to others?  St Ambrose taught that 'when you ask for forgiveness for yourself, be especially generous to others, so that your actions may commend your prayers'.  Ask for the gift of wisdom if you wish to inherit eternal life.
