Reflection

THE WORLD MUST INVEST IN PEACE

Somalia is one of the world's most neglected crises.  For 17 years the country has experienced repeated breakdowns of social, economic and political structures.  Inter-clan violence, social upheaval and displacement are widespread.

The eyes of the world have turned awav from Somalia.  Diplomatic engagement to date has failed to address the needs of ordinary Somalis, and has not respected grassroots political will.  Civilians need urgent protection.  Building peace requires leadership and resources.  More than one million people have spread the violence to other parts of Somalia.  They are classed as internally displaced persons' or IDPS.  These one million are a forgotten people.  World leaders must stop ignoring this crisis.  We need meaningful action for a peaceful future for Somalia.

The Irish and UK governments need to demonstrate commitment and leadership.  Let's put this crisis ftrmly on the global political agenda.  That way we can help to build real peace and a road home for those displaced.  See picture on Church Ambo.
