Reflection

The call to love one another is both a challenge and an ideal.

Let us ask ourselves what is the Christian definition of love?  First of all Love is not found in a collection of words but in the life lived by Jesus of Nazareth whom we proclaim to be the Christ.

This love was accepting, total, open, non-judgemental and forgiving.  Jesus' love brings out all the hidden and underdeveloped aspects of our abilities to love.  Not like the love on our television soaps or glossy magazines like a lot of things skin deep with no foundation.  Those who came into contact with Jesus were never left the same.  Some went away sad when they heard the demands of love.  Others were filled with joy at the Good News offered to them.  No one could be indifferent.  The love which Jesus lives and expects is one which helps foster new relationships.  "I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his masters business I call you friends because I have made know to you everything I have learnt from my father".

The ultimate expression of Jesus' love for us is the cross.  The cross is "the greater love" which moves Jesus to freely lay down his life for the community of faith.

In the final analysis Christian love produces in our hearts a profound sense of joy.  Joy is not a pleasure which quickly passes or with which we    become bored. The joy given by Jesus' love is lasting.                                                                                Fr.Paul
