Reflection

For the second Sunday in a row, Jesus leads us out of fear into faith.  His words to jairus, 'Do not be afraid, only have faith", recall his words to the disciples in the boat during the storm: 'Why are you so frightened?  How is it that you have no faith?' The Gospel draws us into a struggle that we know all too well, the struggle between our fears and our longing to be able to trust in God.

Jesus goes into that most human of struggles.  In the Gospel's view of things, the source of our fear is death.  The disciples in the boat feared imminent death; jairus feared the death of his daughter; the woman with the haemorrhage feared the forces of death already at work in her body.  Death casts its shadow across all that we are and do; it is the ultimate force of destruction; everything that is life is destined for death.  We experience that destructive force in many ways.  In our lives it manifests itself as failure, illness, loss, change, betrayal, hurt and death itself And that's where our fears lie, and because the shadow of death casts itself across the things in life that are most important to us, we can easily find that our lives are dominated by fear.

jairus and the woman with the haemorrhage reach out to Christ in their fear, and Christ calls this faith.  And somehow that allows him to act and to overcome the forces of death at work in their lives.  We will never be able to do what jairus and the woman could do; we will never be able to approach a flesh and blood Jesus and ask him to use his awesome power to remove the destructive force of death from our bodies and lives.  But their stories are told so that we might know that faith will lead us out of fear.
