Reflection

A first question: what does the Trinity mean?  That's largely a theological question.  The Trinity is the mystery at the centre of our faith so we need theological reflection to illuminate it for us.  But there is a second question which is equally important: what does the Trinity mean for me, for us?  Because the Trinity is not just a doctrine, it's not just some abstract theological concept, it's everything about who we are, and what we believe, and how we understand life.  It's the mystery the meaning of which we find hard to understand and yet it's the mystery that gives meaning to our life.  Our immersion in that mystery at our baptism, and our sharing in the life of that mystery around the Eucharistic table, are the powerful moments when we enter into the mystery.  But every day the Father, Son and Spirit open their life to us and every day we choose to share their life.  We are made for community, and we are made for their community.  And the communities that we live in and build, whether they are family communities, workplace communities, parish communities, neighbourhood communities, whatever type of community we participate in will only be a true community in so far as it reflects the community of the Father, Son and Spirit.  And we can only offer that type of community to one another and to the world if we ourselves are participating in the life of the Trinity, sharing in their love, experiencing their forgiveness, knowing what it is to be accepted despite our weakness, living in their peace.
