Reflection

The present world economic turmoil is like that biblical mourning veil in Isaiah covering all peoples since there is such an air of gloom about.  However the present collapse in confidence in the banking system and the downturn in the global economy is not the talking point of the people of Somalia, Sudan, Darfur, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  They are struggling from day to day for the basics of clean water, food and medical care wh@e also coping with the reality that they have been forced from their homes because of conflict and unrest.

in the current Trocaire campaign we are challenged to focus on the needs of these families.  Each week during Lent the conditions under which different families live are highlighted.  This week we are introduced to Angeline a child who was born in South Sudan.  You will find her picture on the Ambo in the church and the following is some information about her:

She was born in Udici in South Sudan but the family fled soon afterwards when she was a very young baby.  She says she is very happy to be back in Udici as it is her home village.

Angeline does many jobs around the home to help her mother.  One of them is pounding.  This is a very physical and labour-intensive task.  The women and girls will generally work in pairs taking turns to pound.  The most common things to pound are sorghum, which can take up to one hour and the lulu nut, which takes longer and is used to make oil for cooking.  The family will only pound what they need for one day and this is one way for them to save food.

When asked if she likes school she said yes because if she finishes she'd like to get a job as a teacher.

The Annual Trocaire Collection in this parish takes place on Sunday 29th March.
