Reflection

William Shakespeare tells us in T/ze Merchant of Venice that the devil can cite
scripture for his own purpose. The Gospel passages that refer to Jesus’ time in the
wilderness and his encounter with the devil gave rise to this utterance.
Catholics aren’t renowned for their ability to quote Scripture chapter and verse but
the hope remains that we are well versed in the story of Scripture and its place in
our lives. Certainly we have become more familiar with the Bible. Rightly so, for
it is important that we know God’s word and reflect on it. It was this rellection that
gave Jesus the strength in the wiidernessmincc it was twinned with deep convictionf
He knew what he was about. He knew where the road would lead. He knew the
Father’s love and constant presence. He was, in a word, rooted.
Today, there’s a call to rootedness in our Faith. Do we really know what it means
to call ourselves Catholic or Roman Catholic? Can we become blinded, unsettled
when others speak to us of their Faith? ls there any need to do that? No! We seek to
respect where others are coming from, as long as it’s a genuine starting place. We
acknowledge their words, give thanks for their conviction while, at the same time,
holding to our own baptism, drawing strength from our sacraments and remaining
aware of our absolute need for God’s presence and direction in all we do.
Lent is an ideal time to spend some time with these thoughts.
